P2P file distribution is not a new concept but knowing how to best utilize it is a concept I'm asked about frequently. The most common question I'm asked is "How do I download torrents?" Well, the more correct question would be "What software do I need to run in order to fetch a file or set of files using the bittorrent protocol?" Read on and I'll give you some quick, easy answers for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
This is just a quick and dirty solution using my favorite client, Azureus. At the end I have provided a link to a full list of BitTorrent clients you can choose from if you fancy a different client. I also will provide a list of legal and legitimate torrent sites.

Quick Solution:

Windows, Mac and Linux - Azureus (My Preference)

Step 1: Download and install the latest Java runtime for your platform

Windows Java
Linux Java
Mac OS X Java

Step 2: Download and install Azureus

Windows Azureus Installer
Mac OS X Azureus Installer
Linux Azureus Installer

Step 3 (Optional): Download and install an IP blocker for security

PeerGuardian 2 for 2000/XP/2003
PeerGuardian for Mac OS X
MoBlock for Linux

Here is a Comprehensive list of BitTorrent clients for Windows, Mac and Linux

Download!

That's it. If you installed the correct thing for each step, you should be able to start downloading torrents. Of course, you'll need some way to find your torrents to download! What you want is a torrent search or a torrent tracker index site.

10 free and legal torrent tracker sites

Now you should be set. Enjoy those downloads!
